About

Sheila DelValle, LMSW, LGSW

Licensed Master Social Worker | Certified Trauma Therapist | Advanced Chemical and Substance Abuse Counselor

Welcome - I'm Sheila, a licensed therapist with specialized experience helping individuals navigate addiction, trauma, and life's most difficult moments. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York and Maryland, a Licensed Graduate Social Worker in Washington, D.C., and a Certified Trauma Therapist. I'm also an Advanced Chemical and Substance Abuse Counselor with expertise in harm reduction and recovery support.

I believe that every person develops unique ways of coping with pain - even when those coping strategies may feel harmful or self-destructive. My goal is to help you understand the purpose those strategies have served, while also working together to develop healthier, more compassionate ways to move forward. Whether you're working through substance use, trauma, grief, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions like anger, fear, or shame, you don't have to do it alone.

Areas of Focus

I understand that healing is not one-size-fits-all. Some clients benefit from structured, skills-based techniques like CBT and DBT, while others connect more with holistic approaches such as acupuncture, mindfulness, and somatic healing. Our work together will be collaborative - we'll explore what works best for you.

I work with adults, young adults, and families seeking support for:

Substance Use Disorders and Addiction Recovery (including harm reduction and relapse prevention)

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Healing from Childhood Trauma and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)

Anxiety, Depression, and Emotional Dysregulation

Curtis Smith

I am a mental health professional on track to graduate from SUNY Empire with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, January 2025. I am also currently enrolled at the Outreach Training Institute, where I am pursuing my CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) certification. With a psychology bachelor's degree I can work in therapy in New York in a variety of ways, including:

Supervised educational program
Students, interns, or residents can practice as part of a supervised educational program at an institution approved by the Department.

Social service sector
Work in non-profit organizations or government agencies, providing community support, counseling, and case management services.

New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH)
Work in a variety of settings across the state to promote mental health and well-being.

I am dedicated to supporting individuals in overcoming life’s challenges and achieving their full potential.

My passion lies in working with individuals facing substance abuse, anger management, fear, shame, guilt, and the unique challenges experienced by the formerly incarcerated and communities of color. My therapeutic approach is built on trust, understanding, open communication, and collaboration. I believe in meeting clients where they are and empowering them to define and pursue their goals.

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a foundation, I help clients identify patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build the tools needed for lasting change, employing an integrative approach. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where individuals feel supported and encouraged to take the next steps toward healing and growth.

The Ideal Client

My ideal client is someone struggling to sort things out in their life. I use motivational interviewing to help clients work through ambivalence by supporting their efforts to change and helping them identify discrepancies between their goals, values and actions. I could not name a client that would not be ideal. Each of us has so many layers. My therapeutic relationships are built with such deep respect, that when the time comes to start peeling back the uncomfortable ones, my clients trust the process.

When I think about how I can help, I always think of a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson. “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people, and the affection of children... To leave the world a better place... To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

I am a good listener, I have a strong desire to help others, I have the ability to instill confidence in people that are struggling with mental health or addiction. I am a coach in the art of motivation, I inspire others when they cannot recognize anything to be inspired about, I have excellent communication, skills, and I respect privacy .
